Christmas Movies for Holiday Spirit when Spokane is Snow-less

by Anna Little

When winter is dragging its feet to finally set up shop in Spokane (seriously, where is the snow?), there is only one way to get into the holiday spirit—Christmas movies.

You know the drill—here are some of the best Christmas movies to get you in the holiday spirit this year!

Love actually

“Love Actually” follows the unfolding of eight unconventinal love stories, all taking place in London, England.

As Christmas approaches and the pressure that surrounds the Holiday season arises, they find themselves all struggling with different troubles in their lives. As each character meets and develops a relationship with the other, they find the most important part about the holidays—love. With witty English humor and a sincere, heartfelt message, Love Actually is the perfect holiday movie to brighten your mood on a cold winter day.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

A classic fantasy tale, the first epic of the Narnia series screams “cozy, nostalgic, winter night.”

After tragedy sets upon London during World War II, four siblings move to a professors house in the countryside. Here, the youngest, Lucy, stumbles upon a Wardrobe that leads to a magical winter wonderland called Narnia. We know this story, right?

After the rest of the siblings discover the magical land, they learn of a conflict that they are destined to resolve, and they find themselves fighting to bring peace back to Narnia.

The film is whimsical, enchanting and the exquistive ensemble to a snowy, holiday evening.

Anastasia

This Disney animated film is based on the true story of the Romanov family in early 20th century Russia. After getting separated from her family at a young age when her palace is invaded, Anya (Anastasia) has no memory of her past or her family. The film takes place a decade after the invasion and follows the return of the “lost princess”. As Anya finds her way back to her roots, she must also face the evil wizard, Rasputin, who hopes to kill the last remaining Romanov heir.

The film captures the crisp winter of 1900’s Europe and provides for a delightful, entertaining watch!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Though not a Christmas movie, the first movie of the Harry Potter franchise holds the comforting and cozy feel of winter. The iconic trio takes on their first adventure at Hogwarts and Harry experiences his first real Christmas in this first installment.

With the magical touch of snow in the corridors and Christmas trees surrounding the school, Hogwarts truly captures the essence of Christmas. The thrilling mystery and blissful innocence of the students makes for a wonderful winter film.

The Holiday

In this holiday feature, English-born Iris and Californian Amanda have both been cheated on by their partners. Heartbroken and in search of some change, the two women switch places in hopes of restarting and finding some peace. Iris and Amanda explore their new locations, where they both end up meeting love interests.

The film follows the two women throughout the holiday season, capturing the joy and spirit of Christmas. An excellent choice for the winter season, The Holiday will have you experiencing all of the emotions!

The O.C- “The Best Chrismukkah Ever”

An iconic 2000’s teen drama, The O.C captures the chaotic lives of wealthy teenagers growing up in Orange County, California.

In this festive episode of the O.C, Seth Cohen introduces his family tradition of Chrismukkah to Ryan, a product of the Christian and Jewish sides of his family conjoining. As Seth hopes to create the best Chrismukkah ever, trouble arises when he gets caught within a love triangle and attempts to entertain both girls at once.

A moment in history for teen drama series, “The Best Chrismukkah Ever” will remind you what good television is.

Rise of the Guardians

Rise of the Guardians is the perfect winter animation to get you into the coziness of the season. Each year, guardians including Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, the Sandman, and the Tooth Fairy work together to fight against evil and protect children across the globe. However, this year, Pitch Black, commonly known as the boogey man, begins to destroy kids’ belief in the guardians and casts “hopelessness” amongst the children across the globe.

The guardians must come together and work with newly appointed guardian Jack Frost in order to bring back “believing” and restore the magic of Christmas.

A thrilling watch, with fun and captivating animation, Rise of The Guardians is the perfect winter film.

The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

Christmas is threatened when Jack Frost plans to overthrow the North pole and create chaos for Santa Claus. As Santa Claus battles to stop Jack Frost’s plot, he must also hide his secret identity from his in-laws who are staying with him for the holidays.

This movie is a quick paced, entertaining, and hilarious holiday watch!

There is sure to be something for you on this list to pull up on your big screen as the countdown to Christmas ticks away. Happy Holidays!
